Hispanic Myths & Legends: El Basilisco Chilote

This lesson introduces beginning language learners to the legend of El Basilisco Chilote (Chile) in a way that promotes using legends to learn about culture in a deep and meaningful way. This lesson asks students to consider some complex ideas and make connections between the products, practices, and beliefs of Hispanics around the world. These activities promote higher-level thinking that would be beyond the grasp of most students in the target language, so the lessons are done in English to make sure they are attainable. These lessons make perfect sub plans as they require no prep and little to no Spanish language production. Students begin by reading the legend of El Basilisco Chilote and illustrating the legend to demonstrate comprehension and understanding. Students are then introduced to the concept of "folk illnesses" which, like the legend, blame illness on supernatural forces and treat them in unconventional ways. Students will learn about 3 common "folk illnesses" and be asked to consider some of the less conventional treatments or myths surrounding sickness in their own culture. In the following activity, students are asked to propose a more "scientific" explanation for the folk illnesses mentioned in the legend and in the second activity. They are also asked to consider reasons why indigenous cultures may resist the treatments and explanations of modern medicine. Finally, students will be introduced to the Mercado de Brujas in La Paz (Bolivia) and the many items it sells to aid in rituals and folk medicine. Students will translate a list of 10 Spanish items to English based on their prior knowledge of vocabulary and use of a dictionary. This activity goes along with the song "Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias which is readily available on YouTube and iTunes. In this activity, students listen to the song and complete the missing lyrics. They are instructed on the formation of gerunds and asked to locate 6 gerunds in the lyrics of the song. Then, they are asked to locate certain lines of the song, copy them, and manipulate them. The manipulation of the lyrics requires them to use the Present Progressive Tense. Finally students will use what they have learned to write simple sentences using the Present Progressive Tense to explain what different people are doing in the music video. These speaking prompts are designed to move students from asking/answering basic questions in Spanish to responding to increasingly complicated prompts around the theme of Free Time Activities and Leisure Time. There are 4 categories of prompts that ask students to move between different levels of communication including the presentation of facts, opinions, feelings, and towards complete openness in social situations. Category A – Yes or No Questions, Either/Or Questions Category B – Additional Information Questions Category C – Expressing Opinions and Feelings Category D – Situational Speaking Prompts & Extended Response You may approach these prompts by moving students through them from Categories A-D in a sequential manner, or you may use them as an opportunity for easy differentiation between the various proficiency levels of Novice to Intermediate learners that may be present in your classroom. Although these prompts have been designed as speaking prompts, they can also be used as writing prompts for individual practice, homework, or assessment. This lesson asks students to consider some complex ideas and make connections between the products, practices, and beliefs of Hispanics around the world. These activities promote higher-level thinking that would be beyond the grasp of most students in the target language, so the lessons are done in English to make sure they are attainable. These lessons make perfect sub plans as they require no prep and little to no Spanish language production. Students begin by reading the legend of La Llorona and illustrating the legend to demonstrate comprehension and understanding. Students are then debriefed on the class system that existed in colonial Mexico and serves as a tie in to the legend itself. Students are then asked to reflect on the social hierarchy within their school building to gain a greater understanding of the feelings and motivations of the lover of La Llorona in the legend. Finally, students will read a second and slightly different version of the legend from Texas. They will be asked to compare and contrast the two versions and reflect on the cultural differences between the two groups. This lesson introduces beginning language learners to the legend of El Cadejo (Central America) in a way that promotes using legends to learn about culture in a deep and meaningful way. This lesson asks students to consider some complex ideas and make connections between the products, practices, and beliefs of Hispanics around the world. These activities promote higher-level thinking that would be beyond the grasp of most students in the target language, so the lessons are done in English to make sure they are attainable. These lessons make perfect sub plans as they require no prep and little to no Spanish language production. Students begin by reading the legend of El Cadejo and illustrating the legend to demonstrate comprehension and understanding. Students are then asked to analyze several paintings created by a Guatemalan using the El Cadejo motif and explain the elements that are common to the paintings and the story. Students are then introduced to the Mayan belief of spirit animals. They are given some examples of nahuales (spirit animals) and asked to choose an appropriate animal based on their characteristics. Finally, students will read the lyrics to a song called "El Cadejo" and list words from the song that relate to the legend and support their conclusions with word meanings and rationale. These activities are meant to help students learn to replace subjects with subject pronouns as well as use the verb SER. These activities go along with the song "Somos Dos" by Bomba Estéreo. This song is readily available on YouTube and iTunes and a link to the song is referenced. These activities may be completed without the music video, so please make sure that the video is appropriate for your students before playing it. Students will begin by reading a brief biography, in Spanish, of the artist. Students will then listen to the song "Somos Dos" and attempt to fill in some common Spanish vocabulary words that are missing from the lyrics of the song. Students will read a tutorial which highlights the present tense forms of the verb SER as well as the use of subject pronouns. Students will look at several still shots from the video and be asked to decide which subject pronouns they would use to talk about the individuals and groups of people shown. This will help to clarify the role of gender in choosing third person subject pronouns. Next students will be asked to find several lines of the song based on their English meanings. They will then manipulate those lyrics so that they include forms of the verb ser and the subject pronouns that are highlighted in the lesson. Finally, there is an application activity which asks them to think more deeply about the subject pronouns by choosing equivalents (i.e. nosotros is the same as the pronouns tú y yo together, Felipe y Juan is the same as Ellos, etc). Do you want to celebrate Thanksgiving free form word searches and crossword puzzles? These activities go along with the song "Gracias a Ti" by Wisin y Yandel which is readily available on YouTube and iTunes. In this activity, students listen to the song and complete the missing lyrics. Then, students will use their knowledge of basic Spanish vocabulary to match the Spanish lyrics with their English meanings. This will give them a good idea as to what the song is about (being thankful). They will then use these newly learned words and phrases from the song to write 4 brief "thank you" notes (in Spanish) to friends, family, or teachers. Although Thanksgiving is not a holiday celebrated in most of the Spanish-speaking world, there are many Hispanic-Americans who have begun to adopt this tradition. These activities are based on a short Spanish language video (link provided) that explains the story behind Thanksgiving. While watching the video, students will complete the video script by listening and including missing words. They will then label several drawings with newly acquired Spanish words from the video. They will also predict the meanings of other words used in the video based on context. These activities are designed to allow students to observe the use of affirmative tú commands in a context that they will find enjoyable and then practice their use. In addition to the grammatical component, this lesson offers cultural information regarding the evolution of the Kuduro style of music and relationship between the Spanish and Portuguese language. Students will begin by listening to the song "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar and attempting to fill in missing lyrics in a cloze activity. A link is provided to the song which is readily available on YouTube as well as iTunes. Students will then use the lyrics of the song to make observations about the formation of both affirmative and negative tú commands in Spanish. Once they have deciphered the pattern, they will move on to an activity in which they will add some moves to this dance by using a variety of regular, stem-changing, reflexive, and irregular verbs to form commands directing someone what to do. Finally, students will learn a bit about the evolution of the Kuduro style of music and identify some Spanish-Portuguese cognates that can be found in the small portuguese section of the lyrics. These activities were designed to allow students to become acquainted with food words in Spanish and to use them reflect on their eating habits in real life. This product contains a reading activity in the form a typical dialogue that might take place in a restaurant. Students are asked to infer meaning and respond to comprehension questions on the reading. The second activity is a vocabulary sort where students are asked to recognize the meanings of common food vocabulary well enough to place them into self-identified categories based on meaning. This product also contains a food log where students can use their food vocabulary to record what they eat over a 5 day period. There is also a follow-up sorting activity where they sort the foods they have eaten into a food pyramid in order to answer some questions, in Spanish, about their diet. These activities are great for paving the way for a classroom discussion about food and eating habits. They will then manipulate those lyrics to include additional food vocabulary while working off the structure of the identified lyrics. Finally, there is a writing / interpersonal speaking activity in which students comment, in Spanish, about how they like various foods (with mustard, without tomato, etc) and exchange information with a classmate.
